The Art of Focusing

Focus. Focus on one phase at the time. We have a tendency to be so impatient that there is no time to stay focused. We think we can focus on a lot things at the same time. Which we can’t.

You have to take your time to finish the ending before you can move on. If you want the transition to be successful, that is. This is “universal”. It applies to your private life and it applies to the corporate organization you probably are a part of.

Before you can move on, you have to leave behind something. If you want to cross the street, you have to leave the sidewalk behind you, cross the street and start all over again on the other side.
We have to grieve over any losses, unlearn what we have to unlearn, and let go of whatever there is to let go of.

Then, and only then are we ready for the move. But we cannot go directly from ending to start. Many do that but seldom with any success. Part of the neutral phase is to completely let go of the past. Clear your mind, making it ready for the new beginning. Some spend a lot of time here, some not. For an organization with a lot of people this is not done in a day or so.

We think the sun turns from one day to the other round December 21st and june 21st. (I know the sun does not turn, but it is the expression we use at least in this country). when it is as darkest right before Christmas, the sun stays in the same position for a couple of days. It does not get any darker, it does not get any lighter. it stays the same for 2 days or so. Opposite in June. Then it starts to get lighter (or darker) every day.

So with us, make use of the neutral phase, then you are well prepared for the new beginning. You are ready to start. Beginnings are great. If we are looking for the slightest of adventure in our lives, we enjoy beginnings. And to make the most of it we should be well prepared. Which unfortunately we are not.

Next time, make sure you take this into consideration.
